NEW YORK - Christie’s American Art Department is proud to announce two superb live sales of 19th century and Western American paintings taking place at our Rockefeller Center saleroom, on 23 January 2024.

American Sublime: Property from an Important Private Collection
, is a single-owner sale comprised of masterworks by the most important historical artists of American Art from Thomas Cole to Childe Hassam. Leading the sale is Cole’s Mount Chocorua, New Hampshire of 1827 (estimate: $600,000-800,000), a painting that represents the pinnacle of achievement in Hudson River School painting and exemplifies the uniting quality throughout this magnificent collection: the sublime. Other highlights include Winslow Homer’s Boy with Blue Dory (estimate: $700,000-1,000,000), a masterful example in watercolor by America’s preeminent painter of 19th century American life; Raphaelle Peale’s Still Life with Raisin Cake (estimate: $250,000-350,000) ; and William Merritt Chase’s 1890 work, The Garden (In the Park) (estimate: $300,000-500,000).

19th Century American and Western Art features paintings, works on paper and sculpture from various notable collections. The sale includes important and fresh-to-market examples from across the traditional 19th-century and Western genres, including several exciting new discoveries. The sale is led by Thomas Moran’s stunning, Grand View Trail (estimate: $600,000-800,000). Highlights of the 19th Century American works include: Martin Johnson Heade’s Magnolias on a Shiny Table (estimate: $700,000-1,000,000); Sanford Robinson Gifford’s Sunset Over New York Bay (estimate: $250,000-350,000); John Frederick Kensett’s Waterfall in the Woods with Indians (estimate: $250,000-350,000); George Inness’s Leeds, New York (estimate: $200,000-300,000); as well as a bronze depicting Nathan Hale by Frederick William MacMonnies (estimate: $200,000-300,000). The Western Art portion of the sale includes a number of pictures from the Grand Views of America collection including Joseph Henry Sharp’s An Insurgent (estimate: $250,000-350,000); William Robinson Leigh’s Grand Canyon (estimate: $120,000-180,000); Thomas Hill’s Campfire with Indians (estimate: $70,000-100,000). The sale also includes an example of Frederic Remington’s legendary Broncho Buster (estimate: $200,000-300,000), which is being sold by a different collector.
