NEW YORK – 19 May 2025 – Phillips has announced recent appointments to the company’s global leadership team. Robert Manley has been named Chairman, Modern and Contemporary Art at Phillips, with Miety Heiden being appointed to Chairman, Private Sales. Both leading experts in the field of Modern and Contemporary art, their promotions underscore Phillips’ continued commitment to the market.

Martin Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, said, “Robert and Miety’s promotions are a testament to their exceptional expertise and dedication to the category of Modern and Contemporary Art. Their deep understanding of the market, coupled with their trusted relationships with collectors around the globe, has made a significant impact on our clients and the wider art and culture communities. I have no doubt they will continue to drive excellence with the professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm that define Phillips and together with Jonathan Crockett, Chairman, Asia, they represent a united leadership team with exceptional reach across key markets.” After joining Phillips in 2016 as Deputy Chairman and Senior International Specialist of 20th Century and Contemporary Art, Mr.

Manley’s expertise and leadership quickly propelled him to the role of Deputy Chairman and Worldwide Co-Head of Modern & Contemporary Art. During his time at Phillips, he has spearheaded several of Phillips' greatest successes. This includes the sale of works formerly from the collection of Francesco Pellizzi, featuring the artworks by Jean-Michel Basquiat that would become the industry-leading lots for the Spring 2024 season in New York and Hong Kong.

He was also instrumental for the consignment of the revered Pop-Art collection of Miles and Shirley Fiterman and the current world records set for a number of artists at Phillips, including Yayoi Kusama and Robert Motherwell, among others. Mr. Manley has also played an instrumental role in the overall growth of the department, alongside Phillips’ wider expansion, since 2016.

Upon joining Phillips nine years ago, Mr. Manley brought with him over 26 years of experience in the industry, having orchestrated several record- breaking Contemporary Art Evening Sales during his 16 years at Christie’s. "Iam deeply honored to step into this role at such a pivotal moment for Phillips," said Mr. Manley. "Over the past nine years, it has been incredibly rewarding to work alongside such adynamic team and contribute to the growth of our Modern & Contemporary Art department. With the market evolving faster than ever, Phillips is uniquely positioned to lead the way. I look forward to continuing to push boundaries, build new relationships, and deliver outstanding results for our collectors around the world."

Ms. Heiden joined the company in 2017 and, since then, has been a crucial addition to developing the auction house’s Private Sales efforts. She plays a key role in managing relationships with many of the world’s top collectors, sourcing exceptional works from all over the globe and driving key consignments for both the auction and Private Sales channels. During her tenure, Phillips’ annual Private Sales total has increased by 46%, with the channel serving as an important gateway for new clients. In 2024, for example, 77% of private sale buyers were first-time buyers at Phillips.

In her time with Phillips, Miety has also grown PhillipsX. The company hosted just 8sales in 2017, when she joined, compared to 27 in 2024. Among the many successful private selling exhibitions hosted globally were New Terrains, awatershed exhibition of important works of contemporary Native American art; Stillness: Hammershøi and American Minimalism, ahistorically significant exhibition offering aunique exploration of the connections between the works of Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi and major American Minimalists; and Gilot, Une Vie, an exhibition of paintings by Françoise Gilot.

Prior to her arrival at Phillips, Ms. Heiden was Sotheby’s Senior Vice President and Head of Contemporary Private Sales for North America. Ms. Heiden said, “It’s been a privilege to help shape the growth of Private Sales at Phillips and to work closely with collectors in bringing extraordinary works to market. I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished, and excited for the outlook ahead, as we continue to expand our reach, connecting with collectors around the globe. The success of our curated exhibitions and the increase in first-time buyers underscore the power of thoughtful storytelling and strategic collaboration. I look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to innovate in the many ways Phillips engages with the international art community.”

Mr. Manley and Ms. Heiden’s appointments come alongside the news that Cheyenne Westphal and Jean-Paul Engelen will both be stepping down from their roles at Phillips. With Ms. Westphal having served for eight years as Global Chairwoman and with Jean-Paul Engelen’s ten-year tenure, most recently serving as President, Americas, and Co-Head of Modern & Contemporary Art, they have each played apivotal role in Phillips’ unprecedented growth. Ms. Westphal and Ms. Engelen will remain with Phillips throughout the remainder of the Spring 2025 season.
