Yuka Yamaji, Head of Photographs, Europe, and Rachel Peart, Head of Department, London, said, “The demand for exceptional classic and contemporary photographs was reaffirmed yesterday with competitive bidding from over 35 countries worldwide, most notably from Europe. Leading the top ten and the 20th edition of ULTIMATE was a previously unseen lifetime print of Diane Arbus’s Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967, from the private collection of celebrated Japanese photographer Ikkō Narahara. The two featured private collections, one from Japan and the other from Europe, performed remarkably with strong prices for works by Richard Avedon, Peter Beard and Irving Penn featuring in the sale’s top ten. ULTIMATE ELLEN VON UNWERTH was once again 100% sold with the 16 Polaroids on offer realising a total of £79,502, more than double the total low estimate. Today’s Helmut Newton online auction was 100% sold and we are thrilled with the result of nearly £2.3million for the two sales. We look forward to building on this momentum with our Photographs from the Martin Z. Margulies Foundation online auction opening on 10 December, followed by our Editions, Photographs and Design auction in Hong Kong on 12 December.”
