Bonhams will offer an auction of props and costumes from Outlander, the television series produced by Sony Pictures Television, as the eighth and final season airs on STARZ in the US and MGM+ in the UK. The live auction takes place on 5 August at Bonhams New Bond Street in London, with an online sale running from 18 June to 6 August.
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books, Outlander follows Claire Fraser, played by Caitríona Balfe, a former World War II nurse who travels through a stone circle to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with the Highland warrior Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan. The series moved from the Scottish Highlands to Paris, the Caribbean and colonial North Carolina across its run.
A free public exhibition of the lots will be held at Bonhams Edinburgh from Tuesday 26 May to Sunday 31 May, and at Bonhams New Bond Street in London from Monday 20 July to Tuesday 4 August. The sale follows the auction house’s earlier sales of costumes and props from The Crown and Downton Abbey.
Highlights include the Red Ball Gown (toile version) created for Claire Fraser in Season 2 (estimate £3,000 to £5,000), a collection of fifteen painted panels for Geillis Duncan’s Still Room set (estimate £3,000 to £5,000), and a set of four panelled doors made for the King Louis Versailles apartment set (estimate £3,000 to £5,000).
Costume lots include Claire Fraser’s wedding night ensemble (estimate £2,500 to £3,500), Brianna Mac Kenzie’s wedding dress (estimate £2,500 to £3,500), a tartan corseted dress worn by Claire Fraser (estimate £2,500 to £3,500), an Ardsmuir prison costume worn by Jamie Fraser (estimate £2,000 to £3,000), and the Raven dress worn by Geillis Duncan (estimate £2,000 to £3,000).
Props on offer include a carved wooden snake used by Jamie Fraser (estimate £800 to £1,200), a painted Scottish standard (estimate £800 to £1,200), the Dragonfly in Amber prop (estimate £800 to £1,200), and a large clapperboard used in the production (estimate £1,000 to £1,500). The series drew on an estimated 50 million copies of Gabaldon’s books sold worldwide, all nine of which reached the New York Times bestseller list.
