
Christie’s will hold its Design live auction on 12 June, featuring work by architects and artists from the last 180 years. Highlights will be on view in Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries from 6 to 12 June.
Leading the sale is the Tiffany Studios Goddard Memorial Window, estimated at $2,000,000 to $3,000,000, which was commissioned in 1909 and completed in 1910 under the supervision of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Proceeds from the sale will support St. Luke’s Church’s missions and endowment.
The first half of the 20th century is represented by work from Jean Dunand, Paul Dupré-Lafon and Pierre Chareau, with the French post-war era further represented by furniture and lighting by Jean Royère and Jean Prouvé. The sale also includes works by Alberto and Diego Giacometti, among them the ‘ Figure’ floor lamp (Tête de femme), estimated at $200,000 to $300,000, and the Feuilles Aux Oiseaux Et Aux Grenouilles side table, estimated at $300,000 to $500,000, from a New York collection.
Works by François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne come from several private collections, including L’enlèvement d’ Europe, estimated at $700,000 to $1,000,000, Le Métaphore (Canard-Bateau), estimated at $80,000 to $120,000, and a ‘ Structure Végétale Aux Papillons, Souris Et Oiseaux’ chandelier, estimated at $1,200,000 to $1,800,000.
Scandinavian design is represented by Paavo Tynell’s ‘ Snowflake’ chandelier, estimated at $200,000 to $300,000, alongside further designs by Kaare Klint and Axel Einar Hjorth. Modern masters including Wendell Castle, Marc Newson and Ron Arad round out the sale, with examples such as Castle’s ‘ Dr. Caligari Desk and Chair’, estimated at $120,000 to $180,000.
The sale will open with the previously announced dedicated auction American Avant-Garde: The James D. Zellerbach Residence by Frances Elkins.
