Sotheby’s Paris will hold Martin Margiela, Hors Normes II as an online sale from 3 to 9 March 2021, presenting the second part of a private collection devoted to the designer. It follows a first session held in October 2019.
The sale offers close to 200 lots of ready-to-wear, limited-edition « Artisanal » pieces and accessories, including numerous complete looks, tracing the Maison Martin Margiela from 1989 to 2009. Among the collections represented is the « retrospective » show of Spring-Summer 1994, staged in an abandoned supermarket, which reissued the designer’s favourite pieces from his earlier years.

Highlights include a grey overdyed cotton jacket with ‘cigarette’ shoulders (est. €1,800 to 2,500) and a tunic made from a Salvation Army leather coat (est. €2,000 to 2,500). The Artisanal group features upcycled, limited-run pieces such as a look from Autumn-Winter 2003-2004 built from a waistcoat of assembled men’s jacket sleeves, a skirt cut from a man’s jacket and a resin-dipped key pendant (est. €4,000 to 6,000).
Other collections in the sale include Spring-Summer 1992, revealed in a disused metro station, represented by an apron skirt made from antique scarves (est. €2,000 to 2,500); the ‘trompe l’oeil’ line of Spring-Summer 1996, with a cardigan, top and skirt ensemble (est. €3,500 to 5,000); and fur wigs created in collaboration with Bless for Autumn-Winter 1997-1998 (est. €1,500 to 2,500).
The Spring-Summer 2002 collection devoted to circles, cut-outs and folds is also present, including a navy leather blouson reworked by hand into a circle (est. €2,000 to 2,500) and a woollen coat formed from folds held by topstitching (est. €1,500 to 2,000).
