Los Angeles, 12 March 2025 - PhillipsX, in partnership with Casterline Goodman Gallery, has announced The Mouse that Rocked: The Art of Stanley Mouse, a Los Angeles selling exhibition devoted to the legendary American artist whose graphic revolution defined rock 'n' roll iconography for decades. Comprising more than 100 paintings, drawings, and works on paper made from the 1980s to today, the exhibition will be on view from 20 March to 17 April 2025 in Phillips' West Hollywood galleries, at 9041 Nemo Street, West Hollywood, CA 90069.
Born in Southern California in 1940, Stanley "Mouse" Miller is best known for the album art and concert posters he produced for some of the most important musicians and bands of the 20th century, including the Grateful Dead, Journey, and the Steve Miller Band. Mouse spent his formative years in Detroit, immersed in the city's Hot Rod culture and the emergence of Motown, where he was first introduced to the pinstriping and airbrushing techniques that became part of his signature style. He eventually settled in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, where he expanded his lexicon of imagery, drawing on art historical and design references reimagined for the Acid Age. The exhibition gathers examples of Mouse's most iconic compositions, offering collectors the opportunity to own a piece of rock 'n' roll history by the visionary artist.
Blake Koh, Phillips' Regional Director, Los Angeles, said, "It is an honor to present The Mouse that Rocked: The Art of Stanley Mouse in our Los Angeles galleries. Stanley's singular visual language, a mix of psychedelic Victoriana, Art Nouveau, and Kustom Kulture, came to define the aesthetic of the Post-War anti-establishment. His work has the enduring, cool appeal of Classic Rock itself, and similar to the music of the era, it has had a lasting impact on American visual culture for the past 50 years."
Robert Casterline, of Casterline Goodman Gallery, said, "I have always followed artists outside of the mainstream marketplace and sought to introduce collectors to overlooked artists whose work has had an important impact on a range of cultural fields. I am delighted to partner with Phillips as we introduce the incredible work that Stanley has produced over the past several decades to a wider audience."
Highlights of the exhibition
The presentation spans four decades of the artist's output, from intimate works on paper to large-scale canvases, and includes both poster concepts and finished paintings. Among the works on view are:
