Leading both sales were important models by Patek Philippe, and strong prices were achieved for sports models by Richard Mille and Rolex, Cartier Art Deco clocks, iconic Japanese brands, alongside independent watchmakers such as Roger Smith, Masahiro Kikuno and Naoya Hida & Co. The sale achieved HK$62 million/ US$7.9 million, exceeding the pre-sale high estimate by 22%. Notably, 66% of the lots sold above their pre-sale high estimates. The auction attracted significant interest from nearly 1,300 collectors and enthusiasts across 54 countries worldwide, contributing to the electric atmosphere in the fully attended saleroom at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in Hong Kong.

Patek Philippe watches once again captivated enthusiasts, particularly the Patek Philippe ref. 5016 in platinum from a distinguished Japanese collector, featuring a previously unknown grey Roman numerals dial- the only known example of this configuration that has appeared on the market- sold for over HK$5.2 million/ US$669,100. Additionally, the ref. 3970 in yellow gold from the rarest and most desirable first series, sold for over HK$3.23 million/ US$ 416,147 , setting a record price for this reference’s first series.

Independent watchmakers shined at this auction, led by the Roger Smith Series 2, Edition 3 in 18k white gold, which fetched HK$3.4 million/ US$440,627. The sale highlighted the artistry of Japanese independent watchmakers, with exceptional pieces from Masahiro Kikuno, Masa’s Pastime, Naoya Hida & Co., Otsuka Lotec, Kurono Tokyo, and Takano drawing enthusiastic bidding and setting auction records for these brands.

This demonstrates the growing appeal of emerging Japanese watchmakers on the global stage. Masahiro Kikuno’s unique Tourbillon 2012 watch in pink gold, featuring a stunning guilloché dial, achieved an impressive HK$2.28 million/ US$293,751, nearly six times the pre-sale high estimate. The first Naoya Hida & Co.

Type 1D-2 to appear in the auction market sold for HK$635,000/ US$81,598, achieving 1.3 times its pre-sale high estimate. The successful bidder of this lot is granted a complementary custom engraving service. Another standout was Otsuka Lotec, who recently won a prize at the 2024 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).

Its unique №6 東雲 “SHINONOME” in stainless steel fetched HK$533,400/ US$68,542, nearly 12 times the pre-sale high estimate. Collectors also showed strong interest in iconic Japanese brands, including Credor and Casio, with spirited competition both in the room and online. The Credor Eichi ref.

GBLR999 sold for HK$1.77 million/ US$228,473, over four times its pre-sale high estimate, setting an auction record for the brand. Another highlight was the Casio G-SHOCK “Dream Project Pure Gold”, which sold for HK$1.14 million/ US$146,876, nearly three times the pre-sale high estimate. Hublot’s unique Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Black Ceramic Rainbow sold for an impressive over HK$2 million/ US$269,272, nearly five times of its pre-sale estimate.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to Fond’ Action, a Swiss-based non-profit foundation. Highlights from The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIX The lively bidding atmosphere continued into the weekend's Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIX , which realised HK$142 million/ US$18 million, surpassing the pre-sale high estimate of HK$139 million/ US$17.8 million. The auction, held on 23 and 24 November, saw spirited participation from nearly 1,500 bidders from 63 countries worldwide.

The sale also witnessed strong online participation, with over 60% of the lots sold to online bidders.

Leading the sale was a fresh-to-the-market Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph ref. 1518 in 18K yellow gold, which soared past its pre-sale high estimate and sold for HK$5.3 million/ US$685,419.

Fantastic results were achieved for sports models, which continue to attract the attention of seasoned collectors, including the Richard Mille ref. RM59-01 Tourbillon Yohan Blake, which realised over HK$5 million/ US$652,780, more than twice its estimate. The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Red Khanjar” ref. 6265 also achieved an exceptional price of over HK$4.9 million/ US$636,461.

Phillips continued to achieve remarkable results for historically important, museum-quality Cartier Art Deco clocks, with all seven clocks by the Maison offered in the sale sold far exceeding their pre-sale estimates.

Aunique Modèle A Mystery Clock created by Cartier France led the section, fetching HK$5 million/ US$642,112. Additionally, La Pendule Art Deco Clock made by Cartier Paris in the 1930s sold for HK$2.9 million/ US$375,349, nearly three times its estimate.

Phillips has long been at the forefront of promoting Independent Watchmaking, featuring an exceptional selection of rare and hard-to-find creations in each sale. This season was no exception, with a partnership with The Lavish Attic, one of Asia's leading retailers of international independent watch brands, offering unique pieces created by six independent watchmakers.
