NEW YORK, In celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday, Christie’s held a special summer auction dedicated to American history, from the Revolutionary era to the present day. America at 250: Important Artifacts and Documents of History totaled $1,353,566. It was 93 percent sold by lot and 89 percent hammer and premium against low estimate. This online sale took place on July first in conjunction with a live sale of Americana, the The Jim Irsay Collection: Icons of History. The top lot in the sale was an early impression of one of the most important, influential, and reproduced images of the revolutionary era in the American colonies: Paul Revere’s powerful rendering of the Boston Massacre of 1770 (price realized: $381,000). Other top results included: A rare and incendiary handbill issued in Philadelphia at the height of resistance to the Tea Act (price realized: $177,800); an historically important early depiction of Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores), painted during the winter of 1826-1827 (price realized: $82,550); an exceptionally rare testimony to the grassroots movement for independence, a broadsheet pamphlet calling for the end to royal authority in Philadelphia two months before the Declaration of Independence (price realized: $88,900).
