With 90% of the lots in the sale being offered at auction for the first time ever or for the first time in over 15 years, it was wonderful to see collectors from over 30 countries responding enthusiastically to this rare opportunity. Leading the sale was Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled, formerly part of the personal collection of David Bowie, which sold for $6.6 million to a bidder seated in the room. Charles White's Let's Walk Together appeared at auction for the first time in its over-70-year history, selling for $698,500. Also included in the sale were two artists making their New York Evening Sale debuts, Olga de Amaral and James Turrell, both of whom set new records. Women artists saw particularly strong demand throughout. In addition to Olga de Amaral, whose Imagen perdida 27 soared to four times its estimate at $1.2 million, three other records were set for women artists. Grace Hartigan's The Fourth sold for $1,633,000, nearly three times its estimate, Kiki Kogelnik's Rainy sold for $355,600 to an online bidder after spirited bidding in the room and on the phones, and Ilana Savdie's Imperial diet, y otros demonios achieved $228,600.
