Carefully curated by esteemed businessman and philanthropist Urban S. Hirsch III (1941-2024) , the sale featured a range of fantastical works by prominent 20th century artists and influential Renaissance artists.
The highlight of the sale was a set of intricate prints by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) titled The Seven Deadly Sins , 1558 which sold for $89,400 – more than 4x its estimate and a record price for the edition.
Overall, Surrealist Treasures | The Urban S. Hirsch III Collection achieved $778,000 . Prints by two influential 20th century Surrealists – Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) and Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) – also saw significant interest.
Carrington's Tuesday , 1987 sold for $76,700 , 38x its estimate, and achieving a record for that edition. Birthday (Self Portrait at Age 30), c. 1970 by Tanning sold for $20,500 , a record for that edition and more than 6x its estimate.
